Greenberg Glusker announced today that Founding Partner Sidney J. Machtinger will be honored by The Center for the Partially Sighted with its Lifetime Vision award. His nearly 30 years of service to the nonprofit organization will be celebrated at a brunch on November 13, 2011 at the Peterson Automotive Museum.
Mr. Machtinger is a former chair of the Center’s Board of Directors and a long-serving member of its Board. The Lifetime Vision Award acknowledges his service and dedication to community.
Mr. Machtinger remains Of Counsel to Greenberg Glusker after retiring from his Taxation and Trusts and Estates practice. He will turn 90 years old in April. He was born in Poland and immigrated as a child with his family to Chicago. Machtinger enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Northwestern University and began his career in government service, first working with Department of Justice and later in the Office of the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service.
During his 50 years of private practice with the Firm, Machtinger represented clients in tax controversy issues before the Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board, and advised on complex estate, gift and trust issues. In addition to his work on behalf of the Center, his ongoing pro bono commitments include serving on the board of directors for the ACLU and its executive committee, as well as long-time service on the Board of Visitors of the UCLA School of Medicine.
“Sidney has been a role model for all of us at the Firm, both in the practice of law and in service to the community,” said Norman Levine, Greenberg Glusker’s former Managing Partner. “We congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
