LOS ANGELES, CA (April 22, 2016) – Greenberg Glusker announced today that Timothy J. Toohey joined as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice as of April 22, 2016. Mr. Toohey is a United States Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US), a European Union Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/EU), and a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM). Toohey, the former head of Morris Polich & Purdy LLP’s Cyber, Privacy and Data Security team, will launch Greenberg Glusker’s Cyber-Security Practice.

“We are extremely pleased with the addition of Tim to the firm and the wealth of experience he brings in the areas of privacy and data protection,” said Bob Baradaran, Greenberg Glusker’s Managing Partner. “With numerous regulations and changing laws, Tim and our newly launched Cyber-Security Practice will have an immediate impact in our ability to counsel clients on the significant challenges of achieving and maintaining compliance in this area.”

As a certified privacy professional, Toohey has handled a wide range of privacy, data security and technology matters, including advising on the Federal Credit Reporting Act, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Electronic Communications Privacy Act, HIPAA, and other federal statutes. He also advises clients regarding California and other state privacy and security laws, including data breach notification requirements. In addition, Tim counsels clients on international privacy and security issues, including compliance with the European Union Data Protection Directive, the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation, and the proposed EU-U.S. Privacy Shield.

Toohey’s practice also includes handling complex litigation, intellectual property and technology litigation. His experience includes trial and arbitration of trademark, design patent and copyright infringement matters, as well as licensing and trade secret disputes. Tim has been involved in several high profile anti-counterfeiting and infringement cases for consumer products and intellectual property matters involving the entertainment industry.

“There are numerous natural synergies between Tim’s practice and the work of both our Intellectual Property group and our Emerging Technology & New Media group,” said Jesse Saivar, Greenberg Glusker’s Intellectual Property Practice Chair. “He will be an invaluable asset to the team.”

Toohey, a frequent speaker and writer on privacy, data security, technology and intellectual property matters, authored Understanding Privacy and Data Protection: What You Need to Know, a comprehensive book published by Thomson Reuters in February 2014. He also has taught courses in UCLA’s History Department on U.S. Constitutional and Legal History and has been a guest lecturer in courses on the protectability of cinematic characters under U.S. copyright law. He received a J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law, a B.A. in Modern European History as a Rhodes Scholar from Wadham College, University of Oxford, and a B.A. in History from Stanford University.
