Facebook, Google Could Be Wild Cards In Privacy Law Fight

Tim Toohey was quoted by Law360 August 17, 2018, discussing the current privacy law fight that has pitted tech companies against federal lawmakers in recent years. However, in light of new privacy protections being implemented by a handful of states – Colorado, California, Ohio and Florida to name a few – tech companies may now be willing to work with lawmakers to draft nationwide legislation.

According to the article, the tide may be shifting as consumers, and U.S. voters, expect companies to take protecting users’ data very seriously in the face of recent high-profile breaches, most notably the millions affected by the purchase of Facebook users’ personal data by Cambridge Analytica.

"By appearing to be in favor of privacy at the federal level, tech companies are able to address a real public relations concern and get out in front of the multifaceted privacy and security issues that they're confronting basically every day," said Toohey.
