Galsor’s Precedent Setting Deals Places Him in California Legal Elite

Greenberg Glusker today announced that Entertainment Group chair Matt Galsor has been named one of The Recorder’s “2012 Attorneys of the Year,” the publication’s annual report recognizing top 20 elite lawyers in California.

In 2012, Galsor structured a precedent-setting deal between major video game publisher Ubisoft Entertainment and New Regency to launch tentpole movie franchises based on Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed, one of the best-selling video games of all time.  The deal is considered influential in shaping how video games will migrate into movies for years to come.

“Matt’s counsel to Ubisoft is part of our continuity of counsel to the game maker, and with the Assassin’s Creed deal, he brought to bear his knowledge of interactive gaming, successful deal making and top-tier movie making,” said Greenberg Glusker Managing Partner Stephen Smith.  “Congratulations to Matt on this recognition of his ingenuity, skill and dedication to clients.”

At the end of last year, for the second year in a row, Variety recognized Galsor in its annual "Dealmaker Impact Report," which spotlights the most influential Hollywood dealmakers.  The Hollywood Reporter recently featured him as an expert on transforming “successful intellectual properties into box-office hits.”  Galsor’s recent notable deals also include:

  • Tom Cruise’s deals for “Jack Reacher,” “Oblivion” (in theaters this April), and “All You Need Is Kill”
  • James Cameron’s joint scientific project with National Geographic involving the expedition to the Mariana Trench; the deal involved sophisticated multiplatform strategies ranging from 3-D motion pictures to publishing and the Internet; Galsor also structured Cameron’s deal with Cirque de Soleil for “Worlds Away 3D”
  • Lightstorm Entertainment’s acquisition of the Vanessa Michael Munroe series of novels by Taylor Stevens, which Cameron plans to direct after Avatar 2 and 3
  • Ernie Cline’s Armada deal with Universal, a high-concept, video-game focused novel follow-up from the New York Times best-selling author of Ready Player One
  • Mark Z. Danielewski’s publishing deal with Pantheon for The Fifty Year Sword
  • Harmony Korine’s director and David Zander’s producer deals for Spring Breakers, in theaters Spring Break 2013

Galsor became chair of the Entertainment Group in November 2012.  He launched and contributes to Film Independent’s Legal Ease blog.  Galsor received a B.A. in Philosophy from UCLA and a J.D. from Columbia Law School.
