Intellectual Property Partner Elizabeth Sbardellati provided comments to Law360 about why the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office should be spared from layoffs and other disruptions because it's fully funded by user fees.

Excerpts:

"Unlike most federal agencies, USPTO is entirely funded by user fees," Elizabeth Sbardellati of Greenberg Glusker LLP told Law360 in emailed comments. "As such, USPTO does not rely on tax dollars to operate."

This effectively means that "USPTO operations are financially independent from the federal government and self-contained," added Sbardellati, head of her firm's trademark protection and enforcement group.
