There is considerable discussion, debate and doubt concerning the fate of the American shopping mall, and the retail industry. Malls were once considered the primary place people went to buy things and to hang out. They were essentially a community’s town hall. But along came online shopping, and the paradigm shifted.

Perhaps one of the more intriguing conversations at 2019’s Connect Retail West was during The Future of Malls panel moderated by Greenberg Glusker’s Craig Coan. The conference drew 300 attendees this week to The Resort at Pelican Hill where they heard how mall owners, developers and investors are breathing new life back into malls today through redevelopment, reinvestment and reinvisioning properties. Developers and investors shared how they are changing retail spaces, and thinking way outside the box to create new spaces where we shop, eat, work, and play.
