Public Hearing Held Today on EPA’s Proposed Rule to Require Petroleum and Natural Gas Facilities to Report GHG Emissions

In March, we reported that the EPA signed a proposed rule that will require petroleum and natural gas facilities emitting 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent or more to report GHG emissions including methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.  EPA will hold public hearings today on the proposed rule.

For now, the EPA’s proposed rule is intended only to collect information on GHG emissions and is not designed to actually restrict those emissions. But the EPA has noted that this is just the first step toward actual reductions in emissions — so industry stakeholders are watching these developments closely.
