Authors sue Salesforce, claim Al trained with pirated books

Daily Journal

Intellectual Property & Entertainment Litigation Partner Steve Stein shared his insights with Daily Journal on a lawsuit in which a group of authors sued software company Salesforce, alleging that its AI model was trained on pirated books.

Excerpts:

The phrase "market dilution" doesn't appear in the Salesforce complaint, but it may well come into play later in the case, said an expert on Al litigation, Steven A. Stein of Greenberg Glusker LLP.

"I imagine that will become a focus, given Chhabria's emphasis in the Meta ruling," Stein said. "He really teed up the issue." But Stein pointed out that the Salesforce case has been assigned not to Chhabria but to Senior U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer in San Francisco. "He might have an entirely different take on the matter."
